We're Going on a Lion Hunt!

Day 2 of our Safari Adventure
The Fantastic Frogs are loving our time in the jungle. We started off this morning by playing in our jungle habitat as everyone arrived.  We then transitioned to Welcome Circle where we sang our Good Morning song, our Frog song, talked about the days of the week, and introduced our special helper.
Austin, Nikhil, and Sparrow wearing animal masks.
Before we began reading our story, Miss Hayley asked the class if anyone had ever seen a lion before. Many of the Frogs had seen a lion, and we found out that we can see lions at the zoo! Miss Hayley introduced the book for today, We're Going on a Lion Hunt

A picture of the map we used for our lion hunt!

The book was about a class who went on a safari to find a lion. They went through mud, sticks, trees, water, grass and finally found the lion cave. They went inside, found the lion and got scared and had to travel all the way back to their class before the lion caught up!

Miss Hayley had manipulatives and visual cues to go along with our story. We also had a map that showed which obstacle the class had to go through. Each Frog made sound effects with various things that went along with the story!
Our props for the story: mud, sticks, a tree, water, grass and lion cave!
After our story was finished and the Frogs sequenced the events, we discussed our Alphabox activity as a class. Once we finished our class chart, the Frogs went to the table to complete their own language activity.

After written language, it was time for bathroom and snack. Shortly after, it was already time to go outside!

Once we were back inside it was time for art. Each Frog had the chance to make their very own lions den! The Frogs really enjoyed getting messy while learning about paper mache. Each Frog got their own pie tin with a balloon. They were encouraged to dip brown strips of paper into the paper mache mixture, or paint it on, and then lay them to cover up the balloon. After the Frogs finished their paper mache, we added dirt and grass seeds around the lions den. To top it off, each Frog was able to add their own lion to its new habitat. These will dry over night and tomorrow morning we will pop the balloons to make room for the lion!

Here are a few of the finished products.
For science we explored the question, "What will make the mud dissolve?" We discussed the word dissolve and what it meant, and then each Frog had the opportunity to form a hypothesis. Selections were vinegar, beans, or grass.
The Frogs' predictions on what will make the mud dissolve.
After we made our predictions, Miss Hayley had three bowls with vinegar, grass, and beans in them. She also passed out mud balls with a jungle animal trapped inside. The Frogs placed their mud balls into the bowl which they chose for their hypothesis. We waited and watched to find out the results.

After waiting and watching, we discovered that vinegar makes the mud dissolve!

After science was completed, it was time for centers. The Frogs really enjoy putting together our jungle puzzle and playing in our water table.

Then it was already time for bathroom and lunch. The Frogs love talking to their friends about their favorite jungle animals. After lunch, and before it was time to go home, the class all went on a lion hunt! We set up mud, sticks, trees, grass, water, and a cave around the room and each Frog took their turn finding the lion!

After our lion hunt, it was time for closing circle and music. We wrapped up the day by singing some class favorites, as well as our song of the day, "We're Going on a Lion Hunt."
We cannot wait to see all of our Frogs tomorrow as we learn about the Animal Boogie with Miss Lenna!
