Under The Great Kapok Tree

Today the Frogs set off on a safari adventure! We geared up for our wild ride by introducing ourselves and saying our favorite colors, then we did a couple of exercises just like the animals in the rain forest!

We're swinging our trunks like elephants!

Next, Miss Aris read The Great Kapok Tree by Lynne Cherry. As we read the story, campers added animal pictures to their habitat, making a colorful display of all the
wildlife in the rain forest.

Listen to the story again here:

In language circle, we made a bubble map of all the animals that we would find in a rain forest. We might see things such as monkeys, tigers, and parrots, but we would never see a dolphin or a puppy! After language circle and snack, we ventured outside to play. We didn't see any rain forest animals, but it was still just as fun!

Dylan, Grayson, Chander, Garrison, and Aarav plant another beautiful garden.

Soon, it was time for art. Miss Aris led us in making our very own Kapok trees. We got to have fun with paint and use hand prints to make leaves!

Nikhil shows off his messy hand after he painted his leaves.
A rainforest full of Kapok trees!
Look how tall real kapok trees are!
At science time, we learned what it means when something is waterproof, and we investigated which substance would make the tree leaves waterproof. Dunking the paper leaves in soap and soda didn't help it stay dry, but when the paper leaves were coated in oil, it helped the water roll right off!
Austin and Mrs. Holly test the paper dipped in soap.
Olivia and Aashu found that the paper dipped in oil was waterproof.
A table full of scientists!
We has some time today to explore our new centers. Some of us went on safari in the jeep, while some of us put together a colorful puzzle with pictures of all our rain forest friends.

The Frogs had fun driving the jeep through the rainforest.
Next, we had lunch and ended the day by singing a couple new songs with Mrs. Holly.

What a great start to Safari Week! We're gearing up for more wild jungle adventures with Miss Hayley tomorrow.
