Welcome to our pad!
What a busy and fun first day at the Speech Garden Summer Camp! We enjoyed beginning our adventure of learning about the human body today. We started our day by greeting our new friends at the door and entering center time activities. We quickly transitioned to our Welcome Circle where we sang our Good Morning Song, introduced our new friends to each other, and started learning our class theme song, "5 Green and Speckled Frogs."
Everyone really enjoyed this song!

Our theme of the week is the Human Body so we started our Language Circle by singing the song "The Skeleton Dance."
After "The Skeleton Dance" song, Miss Hayley read our book of the day, Me and My Amazing Body, by Joan Sweeney. This book talks about different parts of our body. This book taught us today that although our bodies on the inside look the same, we are all very different on the outside.
Grayson, Olivia, Aashu, Dylan, Bobby, Caleb, and William listening to Miss Hayley read our story of the day. |
During our written language activity, we created a bubble map. After completing the whole group activity, the campers were encouraged to fill in their own Bubble Map at the table using body part words and pictures.
For the Bubble Map, the frogs told Miss Hayley what the main idea of the story was, the body, and then worked together to write 5 parts of the body. |
After bathroom and snack time, it was time for recess! This was one of our favorite parts of the camp day.

For our art activity, the Frogs got the chance to have their bodies traced on to white paper. They then were able to glue various bones including a skull, rib cage and backbone. The campers enjoyed striking a pose while being traced!

For our science activity, we explored the question: "Why do we need bones?" Each camper made a prediction about why we need our bones: to think, to digest food, or to support our bodies. Each camper then was given some play dough and straws. We all rolled out a piece of play dough and tried to have it stand up straight by itself, and it couldn't! We then rolled a piece of play dough around a straw, which represented bones, and tried to stand it up again. This time it did work! For our results, we found out that we need bones to support our bodies.

After art and science, the Frogs had the chance to explore Centers. The Frogs had the opportunity to play at the sand table to dig for bones, the kitchen area to practice cooking healthy food, the writing center, reading center, or block table.

After centers, we wrapped up our day by singing some fun and silly songs. A class favorite was the song "We Like Peanut Butter" where each Frog got a stick to practice spreading peanut butter on our heads, shirts, pants, and socks!

We look forward to tomorrow as we will be reading Uncover the Human Body by Luann Colombo where we will dive deeper into learning about the human body!
